I have a hard time trying to understand playing from under 6000 yards. It totally changes the game for most golfers who play from that distance so rarely and doesn’t seem to be fair. Our hdcp’s are typically derived from courses we play that are over 6100 yards and now we get to play driver wedge on most par 4s…I spend the rest of the year trying to play to the hdcp that I get for the rounds I shoot at Mesquite and the World Amateur…they represent my low tournament scores typically for the entire year…

    Kerry,
That is way I keep my bartending side job what I make I use for my Mesquite trip, and I am set.
with a little help from my winnings in Vegas last month.
just remember I have the first round!!
No sun snow on the ground and 35 but still got some good swings at
    Top Golf last night.

  3. Kerry says:

At 55, I play from the same as David, of course I am a much higher HI. Over 20.
Now the bad news. The wife borrowed my Golf Vacation Money.
Of course this was with the sincere promise to have it repaid
before I would need it. I did explain that I would need my entry fee for
Mesquite Amateur soon, so she left me that money. And since my Hotel
is already paid for, Gas & Food & Drink money is all I’ll need for Mesquite.
But, My second Golf Vacation Starts a week after I get home from Mesquite.
I travel to San Fransisco for the 2012 US Open. Volunteer fee is already
paid. Hotel Reservations are made, not paid. As long as I get repaid, I’m fine. Hey the sun came out. First time in over a week. Still only 20* though.

  4. David says:

At 58 now I have always played from 5800 to 6200 here in Chicago and will play from any where, but you are right the lower handycapers should play from the back tee’s and us middle handycapers as 12 and up should be from the middle tee’s.
Just put me on a golf course and I am happy playing any tee!!!
It is snowing so I am going to Top Golf tonigth just to get some swings in
have not touch my clubs since Thanksgiving week in Mesquite.
Have a great holiday all stay save.

  5. Dale Kent says:

Lets hope we don’t have the high winds to deal with this year. But we survived last year so I’m sure we could manage agin.

Merry Christmas and happy new years to all of you. See you all in Mesquite when the weather is warm and the adult beverages are flowing.

  6. george salcedo says:

Not very far, and i agree with you on the distances. Have a great holiday season. STMF

  7. Dale Kent says:

I’m 65 also so I understand what Jerry is talking about with all the aches and pain but I play 6200 to 6300 yds four days a week and to be honest I am usually hitting a 8 down to a pitching wedge on my second shot into par 4’s and driver 5 iron 52 or 54 degree wedge in on par 5’s, so in my opinion 69 and down should never play less then 6000 yds under any circumstance.

The big question George, is how far did that same 5 iron go against the wind at the Conestoga skins game go?

  8. George Salcedo says:

Yea I enjoyed Conestoga too in the wind. On 18 with the wind behind us I hit my 5 iron over 250 It was awesome. Made me feel like a tour player haha. Only 175 days till we do it again. STMF

  9. Jerry says:

It is all in the course design and setup. Those of you that played Conestoga in the skins game will know what I am about to say is true? I played it as a practice round from something over 6300 yards and with the trouble at the end of the fairways and the down hill rolls on alot of the fairways; it played like a 5900 yard course. Wind makes a lot of difference which was seen during the skins and not during my practice round. I actually shot my best round of the week there and of course it had to be a practice. Good that your knee is doing great.I feel my age group should be able to handle any course up to 6200 yards and be fair to all, even those of us that have minor/major ailments. Distance can be an equalizer depending on course setup. Those of you from up north need to come to FL for some good golf weather, mostly in the mid 70’s.

  10. George Salcedo says:

Your right Jerry and last year on 2 of the courses we played i did use alot of my clubs. I hit everything from driver to 6 iron off the tee and that was on the par 4 and 5’s. Some of our courses in Mesquite although very beautiful don’t have much choice between the back tees and the next tee up. For example Oasis Canyon is almost 6500 fromthe back and the next tee up is 5800 and some change. No one should be playing from that close, it becomes a pitch and putt. Now if you read my original post I said the 49 and under flight, not the 65 and over bulging disk flight, haha. And just to let you know my godfathers senior group who are all 65 and up and some are over 75 play from at least 6200 three times a week. I just want to see us play from proper distances and maybe the scores wouldn’t be so low and more people will come enjoy the tourney. After all its about growing the tournament that we all love. And by the way I have gotten in 5 rounds since the knee surgery all from over 6500 and its holding up great. Thanks for asking. George STMF

  11. Kerry says:

You know, you are allowed 14 clubs in your bag. But most folks can score well just using 3 of them. your 5 iron, 9 iron or pitching wedge, & your Putter. Try it one time, you will be surprised.

  12. Jerry says:

Nothing wrong with hitting something other than driver off of a tee box, especially if you want to play all the clubs in your bag from everywhere. Wait tell you get to be 65 with 6 bulging/ruptured discs in your lower back, then you will be glad you don’t have to play the tips. If you still play golf like I do with mine you don’t care where you play from;you are just glad to be there playing, especially in the Desert. Hope the knee dosen’t bother you from the back tees George.

  13. George Salcedo says:

well Kim I’m glad you get to move up but I hope that all of the 49 and unders play from the back tees next year. At least over 6500 yards. The tee boxes up are usually too short and take the driver and long irons out of everyone’s hands, I like to see you have to use all the clubs in your bag. Just my opinion. Hope your well. STMF

  14. Kim Francom says:

Can’t wait for the 2012 tourney, I finally get to move up off off the black tees where we never should have been in the first place. Howdy George, see ya soon.

  15. David says:

I think I have to agree with both of you!!!
not a bad thing to look at.

  16. George Salcedo says:

I got to agree with Vegas Jack. I iunderstand Callaway loyalty but I think the nationwide sporting good stores give more of a option to our winners. Thanks for listening Christian. STMF

  17. Vegas Jack says:

Christian, the thing I like about you is you always respond and when you say you will look into something you do. I just think that a gift card from a nationwide sports store chain would be more reasonable and accessible to everyone including the variety of brand name products it opens us up to other than just Callaway. Yes, Callaway may be a wonderful sponsor, but if Dicks was approached with a guaranteed amount of money being sent their direction every year, how wonderful of a sponsor will they become also?

Hope everyone out there had a Happy Thanksgiving and will have a Very Merry Christmas!

  18. David says:

I hope everybody had a great Thanksgiving, I know I did!!
now I come home to Chicage and rain, wind and cold.
    let play another round Christian!!!

  19. Jack says:

I live in the Tampa Bay area and summer at the Ga/NC/SC border town of Sky Valley, Ga.
I have a convention in Vegas May 22-24 and plan to stay thru the MA.

    1. christian says:

      Jack,

We are looking forward to having you at the event. I hope you enjoy the convention and then some great golf at the 2012 Mesquite Amateur.

  20. Kerry says:

    Happy Thanksgiving to All.

  21. Vegas Jack says:

    Congrats to Phil

Love the event, the people, the courses, the volunteers and the evening events at dinner …. hate the Callaway Gift cards you can only use online. You can’t even use it at the Callaway Store in Las Vegas and they are Callaway; what a joke.

We should get cards for Dicks Sporting Goods, Sports Authority or Golf Discount Website cards, because if you are fortunate to win something and don’t use Callaway anything (and I and 80% of golfers don’t) you have to toss the card in the garbage or sell it on E-bay or Craigslist at a discounted price and go buy the brand of golf equipment you use.

Any gift card should also be used in a store physically or online. Ever try returning something online or buying shoes that don’t fit online?

    Christian are you listening?

    1. christian says:

      Jack,

We do look at all angles of the event and we are looking at the gift card situation. Callaway is a great sponsor and has done a lot to support the event and that should not be forgotten. We understand not everyone plays Callaway but there are a lot of options to purchase on their website. We will be looking at the gift cards to see how it can be a better fit.

  22. Kerry says:

    Christian

How about starting a thread for the up & coming 2012 Mesquite Amateur.
Then we can stop this thread jacking of congratulating Phil on his free entry.

    Kerry

  23. Kerry ( Iam NoOne ) says:

  24. David says:

Jack just keep an eye on the web site and the Blogs cause George will let us know when his web page is up so we can sign in for the skins games.
have a great holiday and look forward to talk with you more.

  25. Kerry ( Iam NoOne ) says:

I am still clicking on that Register Button.
    Nothing yet. Anxious. Hotel Reservations
at the Virgin River are all ready Made.

  26. Kerry ( Iam NoOne ) says:

Can do Jack. George is the Skins Dude. Me & David, we just talk alot.
But just keep coming back to this Blog, and you will find out anything you want. By the way, where you from?
Also, Christian (Tournament Director) does monitor this Blog. So he also will answer Questions that you may have.

  27. Jack says:

I plan to play in the 2012 event. Could you keep
me informed of any pre-tournaments/skins games???
    Thanks

  28. David says:

MMMmmm!!! Ham and eggs $2.99, yes I have had that before and after I ate that I was good till dinner in the tent!!!
    nothing better than that!!

  29. Kerry ( Iam NoOne ) says:

Hey, the Virgin River just announced on Face Book that the Chuck Wagon Restaurant has lowered the price of the Giant Ham & Eggs to $2.99, 24/7. Let’s hope that this is a permanent deal, and not just temporary. Anybody that has had it before, knows how big that Slab of Ham is.

    David,

Almost had the wife talked into going to Mesquite for Thanksgiving. But the cost of Food, Bed, & Gas nixed that. Wendover, Nv here we come again. Where we get Food & Bed for free. and Gas is only $45.00 round trip.

  30. David says:

30 weeks!!! Where has the time gone?? It seems just yesterday we were there in the heat playing golf. Having a few adult beverages and going for the skin!!
Now in Chicago the weather sucks and I will be luck to swing my clubs in the next 30 weeks!!! Well maybe not cause I will be in Vegas over the Thanksgiving week playing a little golf with my second set but it will be golf anyway.
Everybody and you George have a safe and great holiday, with a outstanding New Year.
    David DeRango.

  31. George Salcedo says:

Well just thought I would remind everyone that its only 30 weeks till we are doing it in the Desert. Stay warm and have a nice holiday season. George STMF

  32. David says:

    Christian,

how does your calander look for the 22nd or 23rd for a little golf??
    let me know.

    David

  33. Kerry ( Iam NoOne ) says:

    Christian,

Just saw on the local news that Arizona is trying to put a TOLL on I-15 thru the Arizona Strip, from St George to Mesquite. As much as I would like to see the St George courses returned to the Rotation, this sucks. But I am glad to hear that Conestoga made the cut for 2012. Let’s see: played Falcon Ridge, Coyote Springs, & Palms last year. Could be a possibility in my Rotation for 2012.

And Hey you all, don’t be afraid of Iam NoOne on FaceBook. I don’t bite. Hard

    1. christian says:

      Kerry,

Yes it is being talked about but the process to get it approved has a long way to go. We hope that it does not come to fruition but we will cross that bridge when it comes. For right now there is not any plans to add the St. George courses in the rotation for 2012 unless our numbers increase…….which we hope they do :).

      Christian

  34. David says:

Glad you took care of that, I want to see you next year!!

My knee will not need surgery yet but the doc said a replacement is in my future, knee that is!?!?!?!? not happy about that!!!
    rest easy my friend.

  35. George Salcedo says:

Still recouping from knee surgery. Don’t see me swinging a club for a while but thanks. G STMF

  36. David says:

    George,

In just over 4 weeks I will be in Vegas for the week of Thanksgiving and trying to get together with Christian for a round of golf on the 22nd or 23rd what does your schedule look like?? this would be great if we could pull this off!!!

    David.

  37. George Salcedo says:

had a great time at Cigars under the Stars last year Rich. Count me in. Speaking of counting only 32 weeks to go. STMF

  38. David says:

That is great Rich C. cannot wait for that too Cigars under the Stars is a great way to end the day.
    take care.
    David.

  39. Rich C. says:

    Congrats Phil,
That’s a great prise to win. Looking forward to the 2012 Mesquite AM. I am also planning on another Cigars Under the Stars event Weds. after dinner.
    Rich – PHX., AZ

thanks for the heads up Christian, something more to look forward to!!
better have a beer cart girl running around because we will need it!!!

  43. David says:

Do not forget the 70mph gusts too, keep blowing me off the tee!!
Connestoga was awesome!! a killer course.

    Yes Kerry nice JOTD’s!

  44. george says:

I hope so, we played it last year for the gross skins game and it was awesome. If we hadn’t had 50mph wind and 60 degree weather probably would of been better but great layout with its batch of make or break holes. STMF

  45. Kerry ( Iam NoOne ) says:

    Hey David,

That’s the same e-mail address I have for you.
Hope you are enjoying the JOTD’s that I have been sending you.

  46. Jim says:

Is Connestoga added to courses for next year?

    1. christian says:

      Jim,

Yes Conestoga is in the rotation for the 2012 event. It will be a great addition to the tournament.

      Christian

  47. David says:

    George,

  48. george says:

I want you to hang just for a bit. haha. Hey send me your new email. I will be opening the Doing it in the Desert website soon and want to invite everyone. STMF

  52. Kerry says:

So how soon can we expect Registration to be open? May 28, 2012 is just around the corner. You know, maybe I should practice. Or do the unthinkable for me, take a lesson or 2, or 3, or 4. Might help. I doubt it. Think I’ll save my money for an Adult beverage or 2. Or 3. Or 4.

  53. Kerry says:

    I’ll go along with David.

    George:
Skins game on Monday at Palms?
I think that is what I heard.

    80MPH and wheels down

  54. george says:

I like David’s thinking, haha. Congrats Phil. STMF

  55. David says:

nice going Phill, next year as we check in to the skins game you can buy us a cocktail to toast your free entry.

  56. Kerry says:

Congratulations to Phill on his selection for the free entry to the 2012
    Mesquite Amateur.
